West Heavens is a comprehensive cultural project initiated by China Academy of Art (Hangzhou) and Hanart TZ Gallery (Hong Kong), in collaboration with Modern Asian Thought (Taiwan). The aim is to foster closer understanding of India through contemporary art and scholarship, and develop cross-cultural dialogue based on visual culture and notions of Asian modernity.
Since 2010, through inviting more than 50 artists and scholars to China, with more than 200 sessions of lectures, forums, screenings and workshops, West Heavens has tried to negotiate a link between contemporary India and China’s intellectual/general public. In what sense can contemporary India be made a mirror for the self understanding of contemporary China? How can cultural exchange move beyond the cultural spectacle or the elitist ivory tower, and serve as a means to refresh social imagination?
The commissioner of this project, Johnson Chang and project director Chen Yun will share their experience, and seek input for ideas to move forward to the next stage.
