Prajakta Potnis was born in 1980, her practice sails through painting, site-specific sculptural installations to public art interventions.
Prajakta Potnis’s work dwells between the intimate world of an individual and the world outside which is separated sometimes only by a wall. She refers to the wall as a witness to history that has traces of inhabitance embedded within. She tries to contextualize the wall from a middle class home to the walls that build institutions with a membrane through which imperceptible elements pass, how resolutions passed by top down policies affect an individual. The wall becomes a starting through
which she address social and individual anxieties. Potnis effortlessly weaves complexities of emotions and the veracity of today’s times through her practice.
In 2013, she has been a part of L'exigence de la saudade curated by sumesh sharma and zasha chola at the Kadist Art foundation, Paris; and Uncomfortably numb: Investigation the Uncanny in Contemporary Times curated by Arshiya Lokandwala at the Lakeeren Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2012, she had solo exhibitions simultaneously in two cities Mumbai and Kolkata; Time Lapse and local Time respectively was shown at The Guild art gallery, Mumbai and Experimenter in Kolkata. From 2011 to 2012, she was also part of a travelling exhibition, Generation in Transition: Contemporary Art from India, curated by Magda Kardasz, at the Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania and Zacheta National gallery of art, Warsaw, Poland.
Between 2010 to 2012, her work was part of the traveling exhibition Indian Highway, travelled from Astrup Fearnley Museum of modern art, Norway (2009) to Heart Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Denmark (2010) to Mac Lyon Museum of contemporary art Lyon, France (2011) to Ullens centre for contemporary art, China (2012). She has also participated in a number of significant curated shows, to name some, Of Gods and Goddesses, Cinema, Cricket; The New cultural Icons of India, Curated by Arshiya Lokhandwala at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai.
