Born in Beijing, is a graduate from Department of Chinese Language and Literature in Peking University. Dai was teaching in Department of Film Literature in Beijing Film Academy for 11 years, and started his career as a professor in the Institute of Comparison Literature and Culture in Peking University since 1993, and was the Dean of Film and Culture Development Centre in the university.

Prasenjit Duara is Raffles Professor of the Humanities and Director of Research in Humanities and Social Sciences at the National University of Singapore and emeritus professor of History at the University of Chicago. He is the author of several books on Chinese and East Asian history including Culture, Power and the State: Rural North China, 1900-1942 (Stanford 1988), which won the Fairbank Prize of the AHA and the Levenson Prize of the AAS.
